THE HILL CENTER

Durham, NC
Grant:
$17,050

The program at Hill Center is a new personal accounting and money management simulation for students. To supplement and enrich the Hill Center math curriculum, 5th through 12th grade students will engage in a year-long money management program, called “Money Works.”  The program will consist of grade level activities that build financial life skills, including budgeting, balancing income and expenditures, calculating interest, loans, and service charges. The expertise of practicing actuaries will bring fantastic resources to the math program. With the guidance of Hill classroom teachers, Actuary Mentors will work with Hill students in small groups, providing them with expertise and advice regarding sound financial practices and personal finance management at appropriate levels of sophistication for each grade level of students. In addition, they will provide professional financial review, coaching, and mentoring for the students. They will also share their own career and job experiences related to math with the students, so students can understand career options available in math fields.
