Anna Howard Shaw Middle School

Philadelphia, PA
Grant: $17,283

Shaw Middle School students will participate in exciting math clubs that feature four components namely, Robotics, Math in Sports and Music (MSM), e-missions, and First in Math (24 Challenge).

The Robotics team will participate in an inspiring and celebratory math, science, and technology program. They will also attend at least three robotic competitions. The Math in Sports & Music (MSM) club will allow students to explore various ways math is represented in sports and music. Under the guidance of the teacher and actuaries, students will participate in five e-missions from NASA where they will engage in mathematical calculations and videoconferencing with NASA mathematicians as they solve real world problems. The First in Math team will be specifically designed to get students excited about math computations and online competitions. In addition, a mentoring program will be developed in which 8th graders will work with 5th and 6th graders, thus developing a model of leadership based on the students’ own experiences with actuaries.
