Arrowhead Elementary School

Phoenix, AZ
Grant: $25,000

This dynamic math academy program, Mathematics for Life , allows students to discover and apply mathematical concepts which affect their daily lives currently and in the future. Included in the program are math academies for students and parents. The student and family-focused program incorporates the concepts and skills needed for success in elementary mathematics.

The program consists of monthly academies. Seven school-wide Math Academies take place throughout the year. Each academy has its own theme and begins with a school assembly featuring a guest speaker representing the day's theme. Themes may include restaurant math, sports and math, nature and math, fine arts math as well as types of careers in math. After an all-school assembly, the 650 members of the student body, grades preschool through sixth grade, rotate to different classrooms featuring various activities related to math and its coordinating theme. For instance, the academy that focused on sports and math featured Math Olympics in one classroom. These all-day math days will focus on providing quality, real-life applications of mathematics.

Five 90-minute Math Academies for Parents (MAPs) were offered for parents and their children. These teacher-led academies offer parents ideas and tips covering both content and teaching of mathematics. Six after-school Math Clubs were offered as follow-ups to the Math Academies.
