Baltimore City Community College Baltimore

Southgate, MI
Grant: $35,000

The overarching goal of this program is to enhance ninth and tenth-grade students' interests and abilities in mathematics by exposing them to a simulated work experience that will foster creativity and ingenuity in a business they will actually design and operate.

40 ninth and tenth grade students from target high schools will be identified to create a student-centered, student-run business. These students will develop a business plan to support implementation of a mutually proposed business. Math components such as budget development, percentage calculations for marketing analysis and ratios will be incorporated into each part of the program. Mentors provide their professional expertise in the instruction of budgets, marketing and marketing analysis, distribution, product placement, and all aspects of business management and how each relates to the use of math in actual, everyday transactions. Field trips to businesses will be part of the students' experience in order for them to understand how math is used in everyday working environments.

Actuarial Foundation volunteer mentors show students how to integrate real-world math components into their business project, and provide practical tips to students on the development and implementation of their business.
