This ambitious program On The Road with HIP (Hands-On, Innovative and Purposeful Math) program for students in grades K-5, involves several key components and activities. It begins with three varied Marvelous Math Clubs.

First in Math is an a fast-paced and fun web site that helps strengthen math skills, the Kaleidoscope club will review the algebra and geometry of the working kaleidoscope, and the Duct Tape club will learn about the mathematics behind designing Duct Tape animals.

The next component called Math Trails is an activity designed for their gifted students to allow them to discover and share the math that exists in their own environments. To create a math trail students will choose an identified physical space – such as the Principal’s office, the cafeteria or a local gas station – and carefully walk through the space noting the evidence of mathematics.

HIP Community Math Trips was created for 4th and 5th graders to predict the math neighborhood businesses would use in their work using Tungsten E Palm Pilots to record predictions, data and create graphs and charts.

Each grade level will also take a math trip to a professional or recreational sports game. Using math notebooks or Palm Tungsten E’s, they will fill out pre-designed math sheets showing the ways math is crucial and essential. Students will be tested at the end of the year to determine what they learned of math and sports.
