Calvin Coolidge MicroSociety School

Hillside, NJ
Grant: $32,578

In an attempt to “inspire and challenge every child every day”, Calvin Coolidge MicroSociety School created a Math a la Mode program targeting 5th and 6th grade students. With the assistance of local volunteer actuaries, the focus of the program is in the areas of measurement, geometry, probability, graphing/statistics and more. To activate and cultivate student interest and enjoyment in mathematics, some of the actuarial mentoring interactions involve three Math Project Clubs: “Fraction Attraction”; “The Spatial Odyssey”; and “Create a Board Game.” Actuarial mentors also provide classroom support in math journaling, sharing diversified math career experiences, and student role-playing math adventures. Cultivation of increased parent involvement has been addressed through the creation of a math Web site for families. This program was developed to create a challenging, supportive, education environment resulting in mathematics improvement and enjoyment.
