St. Louis, MO
Grant: $21,500
In partnership with actuaries from the St. Louis Actuaries Club, a grant has been provided to De La Salle Middle School for their new program named: Math ALIVE: Actuaries Lend Inspiration to Value Education. The Math ALIVE program will have a profound impact on the lives of De La Salle's students by extending their math skills and supporting learning with positive mentoring relationships. The program will be held during an extended session at the end of each school day and will consist of hour-long problem solving workshops that challenge students to apply math skills to creative investigations. Additional programs will meet special student needs with remedial tutoring and a school math club.
The three components of the program consist of: weekly math lab will provide real-world contexts for math investigations to reinforce math as a problem-solving exercise; weekly math club is scheduled to be an after-school elective for students with advanced skills or a particular interest in mathematics (club members will learn about careers, play games and prepare for competitions); and remedial tutoring will provide additional help to students with acute deficiencies both after school and during vacation schedules. |
