Education Works

Trenton, NJ
Grant: $16,000

Education Works is a nonprofit organization that developed an after school math club mentoring program. Math club activities will strengthen students’ basic math skills and their understanding of more advanced skills such as geometry, algebra and calculus. A variety of components including financial literacy curricula, the Stock Market Game, and online math-strengthening games will be implemented. The program will expand students’ understanding of the everyday uses of money and explore banking, credit, savings, stock market, investments, loans, entrepreneurship, and more. Through the use of e-learning tools such as the Geometer’s Sketchpad and graphing calculators, students will be actively engaged in building a foundation in algebra and in learning how their investments perform. Two family math nights will inform parents about their children’s math activities and provide practical financial literacy information for adults. Through our college and career exploration component, students will be exposed to math-related college majors and professions and begin to set goals for themselves.

The actuaries act as mentors in the program and as leaders of a weekly “activity day”. Each actuary mentor is asked to serve as a host for one of the math nights and will help present the program components and assist students with their presentation.
