West Greenwich, RI
Grant: $16,610
According to math teachers at Exeter-West Greenwich High School in West Greenwich, RI, students are only exposed to basic statistics topics that have been integrated into their math classes. Teachers at the high school felt that an ASA grant and actuaries could help prepare students for the challenges of these courses by working with them on fun and creative statistic projects.
In their new ASA program, Statistics at Work, students will work with mentors on solving Problems of the Week (POW's) that use statistical concepts the students are studying. Students will use the most innovative software to perform data collection and analysis activities. Mentors will help students prepare for the Designer Math Competition, which will require students to demonstrate how they use a combination of mathematical, analytical and business skills to solve a wide variety of business problems.
