Monroe Middle School

Omaha, NE
Grant: $17,138

The Monroe Mathmagicians-Making Magic with Numbers program was established for 8th grade Monroe Middle School Algebra students. Evaluation for participation in the program begins in 7th grade with recommendations for “underachieving” students who would benefit from the program’s additional mentoring programs in 8th grade Algebra. Actuaries in the Omaha area provide mentoring, assisting with calculator mastery for Algebra, application of statistics in daily life, and increased understanding of mean, median, mode, and range to interpret data. Quarterly math events are scheduled to create higher student achievement and to generate greater student interest in mathematics. Students also participate in business site visits to financial institutions or real world working environments so they can see a practical application to the learning process.
