Morton Middle School is a small urban school located in Lexington, Kentucky. Morton 6th graders will take part in a mentoring program called Math Blast. This project will allow teachers to incorporate research-based strategies to promote student investigation and inquiry as they explore statistics and investigate probability as it relates to real life applications of mathematical concepts. Instructional activities will include Web development using interactive software, a partnership with the Lexington Legends professional baseball team, and much more.
Teachers at Morton see the actuary mentors as the conduit from theory to real life practice. They will provide an understanding of how probability and statistics are applied by professionals through activities such as sharing their job experiences with classes, facilitating connections with other professionals in the community for experiential learning, acting as a resource for information, and collaborating with teachers on how best to teach these concepts.
