Newman Elementary School

Chino, CA
Grant: $27,500

Through this school-based project, mentors for all referred K-6 students, provided academic mentoring before school, during lunch and after school. In addition to mathematics, this pilot also focused on the development of the whole child by providing adult attention to children in need.

This project is unique among the initial grantees in its use of telementoring processes using online capabilities. The actuarial mentors emphasize technology, telecommunications, computers and software as teaching strategies and provide real world applications requiring research, logical solutions and Internet use.

The Newman School pilot has expanded well beyond its targeted student population, and expansion is constrained only by the number of mentors available.
