Go figure — the math club is hot
It Adds Up: Improve Basic Math Instruction
As part of the grant award, actuaries from General Casualty Companies, an insurance provider based in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, are serving as volunteer math mentors in collaboration with Prairie View Middle School. They have established a Math Klub to offer enhanced math activities to a minimum of 115 seventh grade math students who will participate as members of the Klub over a two-year period. Activities are created to engage all students, including advanced and at-risk.
This mentoring program is designed as an in-school and after-school program. All program activities are designed around two overall program goals of increasing students interest in math, and providing a valuable experience for actuaries and other volunteers participating in the program.
The school grant is also used to take Math Klub members on field trips and to buy items such as electrical circuit kits and rocket-building materials. One field trip took students to a corn maze, where they learned map orienteering. About 10 mentors take turns assisting students in study halls and in helping the Math Teacher with larger projects in math classes. Some of the topics explored so far are budgeting, probability through games, investments, restaurant math, shopping and statistics. |
