Homestead, PA
Grant: $16,050
Students at Propel Charter School will learn about all aspects of investing through the BizWiz program, develop a greater enthusiasm for mathematics, develop a greater understanding of the practical application of mathematics and identify professions relying heavily on mathematics. The actuarial mentors in Pennsylvania will assist students in improving math achievement by serving as mentors, supporters, group co-leaders, and Math Club sponsors. Mentors as Supporters in Grades 3 and 4 will offer small group support for one hour each week. Mentors will use manipulatives and games to emphasize mathematical concepts being taught in the regular classroom. Mentors as Project Co-Leaders in Grades 5 and 6 will co-lead a project with the regular classroom teacher for one hour per week. Together the mentor, teacher, and class will develop a math-based project to continue throughout the academic year. In the After-School Math Club K-1 and 2-6 groups, the mentors will use a program called AfterSchool KidzMath™.
