On Thursday afternoons, students at Prosperity Heights Elementary School in St. Paul, MN will participate in a Chess Club with actuaries who will be trained as chess mentors! The Chess Club was developed to help students build reasoning and critical thinking skills. Chess has been proven to improve math and academic performance and is even part of school curriculums in Canada. Special emphasis will be placed on improving math skills. Remaining after school to participate in a chess club in a structured environment will provide these students a chance to have fun while learning.
The club will also attend tournaments at another schools which will allow students to establish relationships and partnerships with others, and build a sense of school pride and community. There will be tournaments held within our own chess club as well. A family chess night will be conducted to encourage parent participation and support, and to inform parents of the research studies and life lessons associated with the game. |
