San Miguel School

Chicago, IL
Grant: $25,000

This grant project was a cooperative effort between members of the Chicago Actuarial Association and the faculty of San Miguel School. The staff and actuarial representatives identified three areas of involvement:

A math enrichment program was developed for implementation during the school's Renaissance period (after school program). The focus is in preparation for the Math Pentathlon Tournaments and/or Math Counts program. This is a program of interactive problem solving games that will help students to develop and practice math concepts and skills. The mentors assist students in developing their computational skills and creativity needed to compete in the Math Pentathlon tournament. A second area of focus during this after school program are on those students who are experiencing difficulty in math and would benefit from tutoring. Tutors are also a part of the students' classroom experience. San Miguel features a technology-assisted individualized math program, which means that most instruction occurs on a one-on-one basis which means that volunteers have a direct impact on the amount of learning support that is provided to each student.
