Warren T. Jackson Elementary School

Atlanta, GA
Grant: $25,900

This grant project sought to infuse mathematical skills and thinking across the curriculum. The project has a comprehensive and well-planned staff development program for teaching mathematics across the curriculum and it is designed to be compatible with the school district wide Saxon mathematics curriculum, emphasizing the use of manipulatives to teach and illustrate mathematical concepts.

With the assistance of actuarial volunteers, this school created math clubs and math labs for each grade level (to include remedial to advanced students) as well as a mathematics booth for the annual "Jackson Jamboree" carnival. One-on-one mathematics tutoring was made available for students with special needs or for those unable to attend the math clubs or math labs. A seminar series, "Free Your Mathematical Mind", was presented to faculty and tutor volunteers as well as communication skills training provided by the Interstate North Toastmasters club. A math newsletter was also used to promote the project with parents, potential volunteers and school district officials.
