West Memphis Christian School

West Memphis, AR
Grant: $22,919

Through our program “Mission: M Possible - Math, Mentors, and Motivation,”
we will be able to create learning environments that engage and empower
students to enhance, to apply, to practice, and to share learned math skills through decision making activities. We feel that caring professionals such as actuaries will have a significant impact on our students as they serve as positive role models and as adults who can encourage and build student academic confidence and math skills.

“Mission: M Possible - Math, Mentors, and Motivation” consists of students working with their mentors on math missions, activities written to enhance learning math concepts including but not limited to measurement and estimation, graphing, area, probability, and functions. Students will not only learn math concepts pertinent to each mission but will also learn how to program the calculator/robot. TI Smart view is an emulator software for the TI-84+ graphing calculator, a tool which easily integrates with SMART Boards. It helps increase student understanding by simultaneously showing multiple representations of equations. TI Smart View provides a clear and easy way for students to follow along by displaying key press sequences. This part of the project will be greatly enhanced by use of the SMART Board which will permit the students to actively participate in programming the calculator and demonstrating their knowledge to their peers.
