Journey House
The Actuarial Foundation has launched an Advancing Student Achievement (ASA) math mentoring program at Journey House. For over 40 years, Journey House has been empowering the Clark Square community on the near south side of Milwaukee to break the cycle of poverty through adult education, youth education and leadership and workforce development programs. One of the greatest needs of Journey House youth is to strengthen their skills in basic mathematics.
Mentoring opportunities will allow you to:
Work with students: There are three different groups of students that need mentors: 5th & 6th grade math club, 7th & 8th grade math club or the High School Math Academy.
Participate in innovation: The Journey House Math Club/Academy is a new and critically needed program to assist young people in being on-grade level in math skills and prepared to enter college. For Journey House youth, this is actually an academic crisis. Since this is a voluntary, after-school program held at a community based organization, the Math Academy participants will be multi-aged, multi-skill-leveled, and attend various Milwaukee Public High Schools. A focus on a customized approach to meet the various skill levels will be imperative. This is where the mentors will be most critical to help develop relationships with participants to meet the variety of their math academic needs and assist in our participants seeing the “bigger picture” and open their minds to greater opportunities that exist beyond the Journey House neighborhood.
Work in a fun environment: Math Academy (Teens) Evening Program at Journey House Youth Center, 2212 Greenfield Avenue, Monday through Thursday, 6pm to 9pm.
Math Club (Middle School) after-school at Journey House Longfellow Community Learning Center, 1021 S. 21st Street, Monday thru Thursday, 3pm to 5pm.
