About the Foundation's Math Challenge Videos

The Actuarial Foundation is building a virtual library of fun, engaging math challenges for teachers, grades 4-12, to access online for use in their classrooms. To build our video library, we need actuaries to submit math brain teasers, word problems or other math mysteries on video. Think of it as you presenting to a classroom of students—from the comfort of your home or office.

We're Looking for Any Math Topics

There really is no limit to the math topics or level of difficulty of your math challenge. Just be sure it will be engaging to kids age 8 to 18. You can even submit your best actuarial math challenge for high-level students! A focus group of teachers will review all the videos and categorize them by grade level, difficulty and topic area.

How Your Video Should Look

The following are examples of the kinds of videos teachers are looking for. They want fun, lively, very brief (less than 3-5 minutes) videos to show their students the fun of math.

Make Your Own Video

Making your own video is easy. Simply find a quiet, well lit room and record your favorite math challenge on a digital video recording device. Speak loudly and clearly and—most importantlyremember that your viewers are kids, so keep it fun! Please stay away from math tutorial types of lessons.

Script to Use With Your Video

To keep these videos consistent, we ask you to follow these three steps:

  1. Begin each math challenge with: “Hello, my name is ____, I am an actuary and I have a problem for you to solve!” (do not use company names or designations).  If you are an actuarial student, please use the same opening, but identify yourself as an actuarial student (do not state your school name).
  2. Present your math challenge and include a five-second pause before giving the solution.  It is important that you speak clearly and loud enough so your voice can be heard.
  3. Close with: “If you enjoyed this math challenge and would like to try others, visit us at Actuarial Foundation dot org."

Submitting Your Video

You must submit your video in wmv, mpg, avi, mov or 3gp format. If you are submitting multiple math challenges, please save them as individual video files. Send your videos on DVD or flash card to:
